What we Do

Palli Progoti Shahayk Samity (PPSS) is a rural Community Development organization in Bangladesh. Rural community development encompasses a range of approaches and activities that aim at improving the welfare and livelihoods of people living in rural areas. As a branch of community development, these approaches pay attention to social issues particularly community organizing. Rural community development is important in developing countries where a large part of the population is engaged in farming. Consequently, a range of community development methods have been created and used by organizations involved in Non-governmental organizations and foreign advisers.

PPSS works with and for the poorest and helpless sector of the community, specially woman from 1979.Mr. Akbar Kabir is founder Chairman and life long President of the organization. It’s area of operation at present is confined to Faridpur, Rajbari, Madaripur, Gopalgonj and Narail district in Bangladesh. It started work in 03(three) villages in 02(two) Unions in the year 1979. At present it has covered about 1050 villages of 190 Unions in 5 districts.

The main objective is to empower the poor, the deprived or suppressed people through creating awareness, encouraging curiosity and ability to question, building unity and co-operation and increasing income generation.

The strategy is to organize such people into groups, each comprising of 20 to 30 persons. These groups meet once a week when they discuss their problems, are helped to find solution, undertake savings and develop income generating projects. During discussion, emphasis is given to nutrition, health care, family planning, planting of trees and arsenic free drinking water. These groups also select beneficiaries among them and function as guarantors for loan. The number of such groups is 4477 females and 58 males. The total amount of saving on April’15 was 19, 26, 32,827/- tk. From Male 57, 30,966/- take and from Female 18, 69, 01,861/- taka.
